in the early 19th century, after the british had seized control of the dutch cape colony in southern africa, the largely dutch settlers at the cape, known as boers, began to migrate to the african interior to escape british rule.
one group of boers crossed the drakensberg mountains into zulu territory. they failed in their negotiations with the zulus for the purchase of land for settling and grazing, and endured a number of assaults. on 16 december 1838, a battle took place between the boers and the zulus on the banks of the ncome river in natal. just 470 boer fighters faced a zulu army estimated to number from 10000 to 20000 men.
