in the 1760s, conflicts between britain and her 13 north american colonies were on the rise because the british government tried to increase control over the colonies and raise taxes at the same time. on 5 march 1770, a crowd of jeering civilians in boston gathered around a small group of british soldiers guarding the customs house, and began throwing snowballs at them. in the midst of the commotion, a soldier was struck down onto the ground by a club. enraged, the soldiers fired into the crowd, killing three people and wounding eight others, two of them mortally.
while it took five years from the boston massacre to the american revolutionary war, the massacre sparked the colonists' desire for independence.
