antigonus, king of macedonia, had a soldier who was venturesome, but whose health was miserable. when the king asked him the reason for his pallor, he admitted that it was a secret disease, whereupon the king took compassion on him and ordered his physicians to employ their utmost skill to cure the man. thus he recovered; but then he ceased to court danger and was no longer a furious fighter.
antigonus expressed his wonder at the change and rebuked him. the man made no secret of the reason, but said: "o king, it is thou who hast made me less daring, by freeing me from those ills which made me set little value on life."
