in september 1776, american revolutionary patriot nathan hale volunteered for an espionage mission behind the british lines in new york. disguised as a dutch schoolteacher, he set off, but was betrayed, arrested, and hanged on the following day.
on the scaffold, the twenty-year-old hale is reported to have declared, "i only regret that i have but one life to lose for my country."
though hale was allowed to write letters on the eve of his execution, they were destroyed by his jailer, who felt that "rebels should never know they had a man who could die with so much firmness."
