at the battle of wilson's creek in 1861 both confederate and union armies suffered heavy casualties. when the fighting had died down a farmer's wife emerged from a cellar under her farmhouse, which was situated near one of the confederate batteries, in time to find a group of soldiers scrumping apples from her trees. when one of their officers told the men to stop at once she told him that she did not mind as everyone had had a bad morning and they must be tired after the fight. "are you abe lincoln's folk, or jeff davis's folk?" she asked. they told her they were confederates. "don't much matter," she said, "there's plenty of apples to go round."
