in 1812, the united states declared war on britain in response to britain's blockade on her shipping during the napoleonic wars. the war saw british troops entering and sacking washington. as well as burning the white house, they also burned the library of congress and the offices of the national intelligence newspaper. admiral cochrane had a particular score to settle with the paper, which had vilified him in print. he ordered his men to scatter the printing type, shouting gleefully, "be sure that all the cs are destroyed so that the rascals cannot any longer abuse my name."
