as the first world war came to an end in 1918, millions of british servicemen returned to the " land fit for heroes " promised by prime minister david lloyd george. one ex-serviceman's wife wrote: " we'd had a war wedding before he left, so we didn't have a house of our own. after a few months we were given a railway carriage to live in. that was the home for heroes. "
and an ex-serviceman wrote: " i had a walk around and eventually sat on a seat on the embankment. i must have dozed off. i woke as dawn was breaking, and what a sight it was. all the seats were full of old soldiers, and a lot more were lying on the steps, some wrapped up in old newspapers. men who had fought in the trenches, now unwanted and left to starve, were all huddled together. "
