in the 15th century, the hussites in bohemia demanded a reformed national church. despite crusades led by the holy roman emperor sigismund, the hussites under their general jan zizka remained undefeated. zizka, who lost both eyes during the course of his military career, died in 1424. on his deathbed he ordered that his skin be used to cover a drum so that it could sound defiance to the enemies. the drum survived for several centuries, and was beaten on the outbreak of the thirty years war in 1618.
