shortly after his victory at el alamein, bernard montgomery dined with the captured german general wilhelm von thoma. montgomery, famously self-centred and arrogant, was roundly criticised by the british press and opposition mps in the house of commons. winston churchill astutely deflected the criticism. "poor von thoma," he said. "i too have dined with montgomery!"
