in 1209, simon de montfort led a crusade against the cathars in southern france and took the town of beziers. when the town was sacked, a question arose over how its upstanding christians might be distinguished from the damned heretics. monfort's solution was simple:"kill them all. the lord will know his own."..tens of thousands of men, women, and children were consequently killed.
一二○九年，一支十字军由孟福尔率领，进犯法国南部卡特里派教徒，攻下了贝济耶城，准备洗劫，问题是难以分辨城中持守正道的基督教徒和罪该万死的异端教徒。孟福尔有个很简单的办法：「格杀勿论。天主之徒，天主自会分辨。」数以万计成年男女以至儿童于是被杀。
【解说】christian就是基督徒，但「基督（christ）徒」三字常被误解。年前我有文章说「曾荫权是基督徒」，不少读者就来信说「他其实是天主教徒」，殊不知christians包括天主教徒（catholics）和新教徒（protestants）。假如十六世纪兴起的新教才可称为基督教，天主教徒胸前就不得挂耶稣基督的十字架了。
