On Sunday night Valentin Ivanov, a 44-year-old music teacher from Moscow, became the latest to enter the World Cup hall of refereeing infamy afterbrandishing[1]a record-breaking 16 yellow cards and four reds in a game. （1）His performance during Portugal's ill-tempered 1-0 victory over Holland yesterday sparked a debate about the standard of refereeing at the tournament- with Sepp Blatter, the president of football's world governing body, Fifa, suggesting Ivanov should himself have been cautioned for his display.
