The Trumpet of the Swan(《真爱伴鹅行》)。
作者White在写给小读者的一封信中,这样写道:“Although my stories are imaginary, I like to think that there is some truth in them, too—truth about the way people and animals feel and think and act.”
Friendship, Caring
& Promise
Fern: You’re not going to kill it, are you?
Mr. Arable: It’s a runt Now, go back to bed.
Fern: No, it’s not fair! It can’t help being born small.
Mr. Arable: Careful.
Fern: If I’d been born small, would you have killed me?
Mr. Arable: Of course not. A little girl is one thing. A runty pig is another.
Fern: There’s no difference! This is unfair and unjust. How could you be so heartless?
Mr. Arable: Come here. I want to show you something. You see that? You see? There’s 11 pigs and only 10 teats. Sow can’t feed it, honey.
Fern: Then I will. I’ll feed you and take care of you and...absolutely will not let you kill him.
Mr. Arable: Pretty soon there’s gonna be no place in the barn for a pig.
Fern: I promised I’d take care of him.
Mr. Arable: Well, I’l letting you out of your promise.
Fern: I didn’t promise you. I promised Wilbur.
Ike the Horse: Spider! Spider! Get it away from me! Get it away! Get it away!
Samuel the Sheep: All right, keep your distance there.
Golly the Goose: That thing is creepy(恐怖的).
Gussy the Goose: Golly! You’re not being rude, are you?
Golly the Goose: No, no, no. I meant “creepy” in a nice way. You know, creepy good.
Others: Disgusting!
Others: They eat their menfolk, you know.
Wilbur: Hi, there.
Templeton: Oh, you’re a pig. You’re a pig. Pig equals slop (泔水). The rat is happy.
Wilbur: My name’s Wilbur. Do you have a name? Or is it just“the rat”?
Templeton: Did you say “just the rat”?For your information, pig, the rat rules. We were here long before your kind, and we’ll be here long after. So, you just keep that in mind next time you feel like reducing me to “just the rat.”
Wilbur: You called yourself “the rat.”
Templeton: I can call me that. You can’t.
Wilbur: Good night. Good night. Good night!
Charlotte: Good night.
Wilbur: Huh? Who said that? Who are you? Where are you? Are you invisible?
Charlotte: No, I’l nocturnal, which means I work at night, when you should be sleeping. Now, I need to concentrate, so, good night.
Wilbur: But I can’t sleep now! Please, tell me who you are. I’l just really lonely.
Charlotte: So I’ve seen. Look, you seem like a very nice pig, so I’ll tell you what. If you go to sleep right now and let me work, we can converse tomorrow.
Wilbur: Converse?
Charlotte: I think your word was “chat.”
Wilbur: Oh. Great! All right. Good night. Good night. Good night.
Charlotte: Good night.
Wilbur: Why would anyone despise Charlotte? She made that amazing web, and she keeps bugs out of the barn.
Templeton: Look at her. I mean, don’t you think she’s a little...What’s the word?
Wilbur: I think she’s beautiful.
Samuel the Sheep: I beg your pardon. She is hideous! Are we even seeing the same ruddy creature?
Wilbur: I guess not.
Templeton: Hopeless.
Bitsy the Cow: What a sorry little friendship that’s going to be.
Charlotte: I’l making you a promise right now. I am not going to let them kill you.
Wilbur: You’re a spider. You’re little. They’re huge! How are you going to stop them?
Charlotte: I have no idea. But it’s a promise, and promises are something I never break.
也许观众一开始并不明白为何Charlotte会帮助小猪,直到影片快结束时Charlotte说,“You made me your friend, and, in doing so, you made a spider beautiful to everyone in that barn.” 同时,对朋友许下的诺言,是不可亵渎的: “Once a promise is made, it needs to be kept.” Wilbur: I’ll carry you the rest of the way. We’ll go back to the barn, and I’ll take care of you...You’ve done so much for me!
Charlotte: No, Wilbur. Don’t you know what you’ve already done? You made me your friend, and, in doing so, you made a spider beautiful to everyone in that barn.
Wilbur: I didn’t do anything, Charlotte. You did it all.
Charlotte: No. My webs were no miracle, Wilbur. I was only describing what I saw. The miracle is you.
Miracle & Life Circle
It was a deeply ordinary place. No astonishing thing ever happened there. The people who lived there were just regular people. And the animals...Well, they were just plain old animals...”
连Wilbur的主人、三番五次提出要把Wilbur做成圣诞大餐的Uncle Homer也动情地表示:“A lot of you have asked me, ‘How could this have happened?’ I don’t know. But it has happened in a time when we really don’t see many miraculous things. Or maybe we do. Maybe they’re all right there around us, every day, and we just don’t know where to look.”
It was as if people knew they lived in a special place now. And, in small ways, they started being special people, a little bit kinder, a bit more understanding. And the animals felt different, too.”
Charlotte: I’l languishing.
Wilbur: What does that mean?
Charlotte: It means I’l dying.
Wilbur: What? You can’t die!
Charlotte: Wilbur, we’re born, we live, and, when our time comes, we die. It’s just the natural cycle of life.
Charlotte的生命得到了延续,应验了那句life had come full circle。
