战 争 结 束 了
the end of the first world war came as an anti-climax for many. lorna neill, a young british woman working as a nurse for the voluntary aid detachment, recalled:
i was sitting alone in the driver's seat and at eleven o'clock the sirens went off and they went on and on. then the men up at the bull ring started to blow the reveille, and we knew that it was all over.
i didn't feel a bit elated. the men who were shovelling coal were quite depressed and one of them said, "the bloody war's over." it wasn't an exciting time at all. it wasn't very easy to feel jubilant when we seemed to be surrounded by rows and rows of white crosses and acres and acres of hospitals with beds full of wounded men. we just thought, "thank god it's over. let's go home."
